About the MARIE Commemoration Event

Hosted by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum a California Public Benefit 501(c)(3).  The mission of the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is to preserve and celebrate the maritime heritage of the California Coast and present it to the public in an interesting and exciting way.

The Marie Commemoration Event honors the men, events, community, and technology surrounding the seven men who set out at sunrise, 7 AM, on Tuesday, June 7, 1960 aboard the vessel, MARIE from Santa Barbara Harbor and the ensuing search and rescue effort that occurred as a result of the MARIE’s failure to return.  Included in the activities were a Friday evening social, Saturday evening ceremony and reception, and a Sunday sunrise wreath laying ceremony at sea.  Following the weekend of activities is a multi-media exhibit MARIE REMEMBERED: Seven Men Lost At Sea Expanding The Frontier of Infrared through  June 21, 2010 at the SB Maritime Museum.   This initiative is important because the story begs for an honorable retelling of events and circumstances.

About the MARIE Project

I am Teresa Newton-Terres, daughter of Diego S. Terres, Jr., one of the men lost on the MARIE.  I'm honored and humbled to be part of this effort to connect the families, friends, and colleagues of the men lost on the MARIE  and to commemorate their loss.   I consider the opportunity to compile the associated stories and facts, record oral histories, dispel misinformation, all in an attempt to shed new light on the men of the MARIE a privilege.

On behalf of the families, I am working to piece together, as Paul Harvey would say, "The rest of the story."  The MARIE Project is an initiative launched by Teresa Newton-Terres,

Please, help me locate the Timothy Lovette family and friends because all the other families have connected.

The initial steps include locating as much information as possible as well as locate all those who have a piece of the story...  Many folks have already added their threads of information to the MARIE story. Connecting with renown sculptor James "Bud" Bottom and discovering the inspiration and MARIE connection behind his bronze dolphin sculptures is one such story.  Gaining insights into the cerebral playfulness of the retired Raytheon Engineers and staff was another milestone.  Learning that my father and Dale Howell (the third victim recovered.) were childhood friends added more threads to the story.  Also documents in the Howell family archives included some story beads to thread together.  My heart was filled with tenderness as I read an email sent to me Valentines Day 2009 as I began to learn of Hal Mackie and the former Mrs. Mackie’s enduring spirit and love.  There are many more story threads that are weaving together a tapestry.  What can you add?

This initiative is important because it’s time to unravel the facts from the myths, the surviving family and friends need to tell their story, while others need to hold a memorial.  Hopefully everyone will rejoice in the transcendent lessons gained with a 50yr/big-picture perspective.

Any success gained by this initiative is due to the many who have and are contributing...I am only one of these folks.  Eventually, there will be a full reporting.  Thank you to those who have added a thread to the story of the MARIE as we prepare for the MARIE Commemoration Event, June 4-6, 2010.

Maybe you will enjoy seeing our MARIE Project scrapbook.

MARIE Project Goals:

First: Remember, Honor and Rejoice in the memory of seven men who risked their lives in a project to push the scientific envelope in the origins of infrared technology and were lost at sea in the MARIE tragedy June 7, 1960.

Second: Motivate a new generation of explorer and sportsmen to expand their frontiers in service to others.

Third: Encourage youth into programs and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and  Project Management (STEM-P).

Fourth: Advocate a positive message of value to today’s families/children of people lost in service to our nation (Military and Civilian).

FifthEnlighten people to a big picture, faith based, perspective.

To remember,

To honor,

To Rejoice Because We Can..
