The Natural State of Arkansas:

Calendar Year in the Natural State of Arkansas

Mountain View, Eureka Springs, Heber Springs, Hiking, Hot Springs.

Heber Springs, AR...

The Heber Springs two most popular attractions are Greer's Ferry Lake and the Little Red River.  Most activity here is centered around these two attractions, although there is plenty of golf and antique shopping also in the area.  Outdoor sports are king here, and most of this packet focuses on them.  The Chamber of Commerce can be contacted at (800) 774-3237 and at www.heber-springs.com.

 Fishing

Greer's Ferry Lake holds two current world records, walleye and hybrid bass, and has 32,000 surface acres of crystal clear

water to swallow up the hordes of people that flock to it in season.  Spring runs of white bass and walleye make for excellent fishing in feeder creeks.  Fish for smallmouth and all black bass species off rocky banks and cliffs.  Stripers and hybrids are found in the open water.

Bank fishing can be effective for some species, but having a boat is almost a must.  Rentals are available at area marinas, which also have maps specifically for fishing Greer's Ferry.  Weekly fishing reports are available on the Arkansas game and fish website, www.agfc.com.

Little Red River currently holds the world record for the biggest brown trout ever at 40 pounds and 4 ounces.  A huge population of trout, brookies, bows, cutts, and browns, and a smaller size than the White attract fly-fishermen to the Little Red.

There are several public accesses, such as , JFK, Cow Shoals, Swinging Bridge, and Libby Shoals, where wade fishing is good.  Can be crowded in the spring and summer months, so renting a boat is a good answer.  Boat rentals are available at any of the trout docks along the river.

Mostly sowbugs, midge, and leech patterns for fly-fishing, with spinners, worms, and eggs for spin fishing.  Light line is key here, no heavier than 5x tippet, or 4 lb. Mono.  Flurocarbon is important on this river, the fish are pressured and can be line sensitive.
